We hoped the Easter bunny would bring us a baby this year but we got chocolate instead. A little disappointing even though it was very nice chocolate from Rogers‘, La Suissa and Mink.

We didn’t plan much for the holiday but it still passed by in a flash. On Friday, we had Kate and her mom over for brunch and we saw Crazy Heart in the afternoon. On Saturday, we got up early and walked the seawall to Granville Island to get some Easter dinner provisions. We also indulged in a pre-birthday high tea celebration at the Secret Garden Tea Company in Kerrisdale with lots of scrumptious tea sandwiches and treats.

We wrapped up the weekend with a morning walk along Spanish Banks and a delicious Easter dinner consisting of a roasted Polderside Rebro chicken, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, asparagus and lemon meringue pie.

Happy Easter from our house to yours!

We decided to spend our last Christmas as a twosome in Vancouver. It has been very relaxing. Filled with eating, walks, reading and entertaining. And we still have a week to go.

Here are some pictures of our Christmas holidays so far:

We are getting ready for our first green Christmas! It is our third time celebrating the season in Vancouver but the first without snow.

The holidays kick off tonight with the traditional Medd dinner of tourtiere. There are Christmas movies on the PVR, a stack of novels by the bed and a full 10 days ahead of us at home.

From our house to yours, we wish you much love and happiness in 2010.

My true love gave to me 108 pieces of delicious Christmas baking. Yes, it’s that most wonderful time of year when our freezer is packed with goodies from the annual baking exchange.

This year I made cranberry pistachio icebox cookies and packaged them in red damask sacks with cute gift tags courtesy of Jeannette at everybody likes sandwiches.

I also tried my hand at candy making – coffee toffee and orangettes – for the first time. Both turned out well and some days it feels like we are on the North Pole eating plan of  the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup.

I hope you are opening your mailbox and finding it stuffed with red envelopes and good cheer these days. This year I dug into the stash of Christmas cards from previous years and repurposed them to give them a second chance to spread holiday cheer.

Instead of flying home to Vancouver after the week Alyssa joined me in Regina. We rented a car and headed up to Theodore to spend the weekend with Dianne and Sheridan. It was a very relaxing weekend filled with tile rummy, crossword puzzles, walks and country drives. A great visit.

Here are a few pics of Theodore and surrounding area, including one of a Polinsky Honey Farm bee yard.

Red velvet cake may be a Southern delicacy but with a thick layer of cream cheese icing it is also fitting for a Canada Day treat. Here I’ve added some edible flower petals from the Trout Lake farmers’ market to help it reach Canadian content quota and make it a little more festive.

We are off berry picking (red berries, of course) tomorrow. Happy Canada Day!

Sometimes it is the simple things that make your day and Saturday was full of them. It started with a hearty Spanish fritatta followed by a trip to the library to pick up American Wife. I came home to find a letterpress card made by Smudge Ink, a dry-fit hat that I have been coveting, cookies from Uprising Breads, a cheerful bouquet from Full Bloom Flowers (our wedding florist) and a wordle made from our very own love story.

Valentine’s Day is nice, but it is even nicer to have love all year round. How lucky am I?

Gung hai fat choy – happy year of the ox everyone!

The 2009 Chinese New Year parade was definitely the wettest, coldest one I have been to so far. But neither sleet nor rain could keep me from delivering the little red envelopes! And I’m not going to lie, the promise of hot tea and dim sum helped keep a cheerful new year smile on my face as we paraded through the rain.

Another gem from 30 Rock.

Dennis: Dennis Duffy, Beeper King.
Jack: That’s a sharp tie you’ve got there Dennis.
Dennis: That douchebag up front made me wear it.
Jack: Does he know you’re the Beeper King?
Dennis: I don’t think so.
Liz: This is clearly the nicest restaurant we’ve ever been to.
Dennis: Hold on a second, this place ain’t that nice, alright. It’s got rats and roaches like every other restaurant.
Liz: No rat talk tonight, okay.
Dennis: (to Jack) You know there are 17 million rats per person in Manhattan? You eat a pound of rat crap every year without even knowing it.
Jack: I think I read about that in The New Yorker. (pause) Um, anyway, we’ll leave you two to your meal. I hope you enjoy the choices that you’ve made.

Andrew got me a year-long subscription to the New Yorker magazine for Christmas so you can expect more interesting tidbits in the year ahead.
