Last year on this day Andrew and I exchanged marriage vows and celebrated our union with family and friends into the wee hours. The year that followed has been a happy one and has passed in the blink of an eye.

Fast forward one year and I find myself with another Medd boy to love and cherish. Here are Nolan and I celebrating my first Mother’s Day. Nolan and his dad set the bar high for future Mother’s Days with a luxurious gift of a day at the spa (obviously for use at a future point in time.) Thanks boys! I also got a very cool necklace made from an “N” scrabble tile and a tomato plant from Kate and Drew. Will my track record with plants improve now that I have some real-life nurturing experience? Stay tuned to see if we can harvest some tomatoes this summer or if the plant goes the way of all the other greenery I have attempted to cultivate.

Sharon and Jen bought Nolan a great bouncy chair for Alyssa’s baby shower. It has turned out to be one of his favourite places to relax.

Last week we found out that Nolan had lost more weight than was expected. That meant we had to supplement breast-feeding with a bottle. This wasn’t an ideal situation. It took time away from establishing breast-feeding and caused Alyssa emotional anguish. However, from a selfish perspective it did allow me to get involved in feeding Nolan. This provided some special father-son bonding time during some late night feedings.

During that time I have often though about possibilities. My son is only 10 days old so he has a lifetime of possibilities ahead of him.

What will he become? Who will be grow up to be? Will he like sports or politics like his Dad? Maybe. Will he love literature or cooking like his Mom? Hopefully. Will he introduce Alyssa and I to new things. Most definitely.

I can’t wait to see how all these possibilities turn out.

It has been just over a week since Nolan was born. It won’t come as a surprise to the parents out there but it feels like a month. We have been learning lots and trying to get some sleep whenever we can. Nolan is a very sweet little guy and we are so lucky to have him in our life.

So, what have we been up to over the past week?

Well, we’ve spent most of our time trying to get Nolan to feed. That hasn’t always been easy. He seems most interested in sleeping these days. Apparently I was a sleepy baby too so maybe he is taking after Dad. We are very thankful for all the support from our prenatal program and the local community health office.

When Nolan feeds it inevitably means diaper changes. With a son there is some additional risk to this activity. You have to be quick on the draw or risk getting peed on. That has happened to both Alyssa and I a few times. Now we keep a cloth nearby and use it as a shield during diaper changes. We might have to invest in one of these.

The weather has been pretty nice in Vancouver so we’ve taken the stroller for a few spins around the neighbourhood this week. It has been nice introducing Nolan to Commercial Drive. We haven’t ventured too far yet or tried to navigate any stores with the stroller. Maybe next week we’ll take Nolan shopping for groceries.

The most worrisome event over the past week was our quick trip to BC Children’s Emergency. Nolan was a bit lethargic so the Community Health Nurse suggested we visit emergency. The main reason was to get a biliruben test which would determine whether or not Nolan had jaundice. Thankfully everything came back negative. So Nolan’s first Saturday involved a trip to emergency. I’m confident it was more traumatic for his parents than it was for him. Everyone at the hospital was great but hopefully we won’t have to see them again anytime soon.

So it was an eventful week from our perspective. On one hand it was a long week but on the other I can’t believe it how fast it went. I think that will be a recurring theme of parenthood.

More updates to come soon.

We are excited to welcome Nolan Derek Medd to our family. He was born at 5:19PM on April 13th. He weighs 9.1 lbs and is 21 inches long.

You can be sure you’ll be seeing lots more pictures of him in the coming weeks and months.

When I was growing up I really wanted a sister. I got a brother when I was four, a second brother when I was 10 and, finally, at 12,  a sister materialized. At that point,  I felt like we had missed the boat for all the things – sharing clothes, hobbies and friends – that made having a sister so much fun.

Flash forward to 2010: my sister is almost 20 and we live in the same city. Although we are at different stages in our personal and professional lives, we have found common ground and have lots of fun together. We both like to explore our creative sides and are always sharing inspirations and new ideas for projects with each other. As stereotypical as it sounds, my sister keeps me current with new bands and happenings around town and I provide her with insider info, or so I like to think, from the perspective of someone who has lived in Vancity for a while.

We also share a love for baking and trying new recipes. One of the benefits of this is that we no longer have to make our own birthday cakes. Here we are last week with the German chocolate cake that I requested to celebrate turning 32. I’m not sure who is more pleased; me that I’m about to eat this divine cake or my sister who is impressed with her handiwork.

We decided to spend our last Christmas as a twosome in Vancouver. It has been very relaxing. Filled with eating, walks, reading and entertaining. And we still have a week to go.

Here are some pictures of our Christmas holidays so far:

I’d like to say that the main reason for not updating our blog regularly is that we have been SO busy. While that isn’t really true we have been a few places lately.

One recent trip was to spend time with the Medds and Clarks over Thanksgiving. Everyone was able to come so it was a wonderful reunion and gave us a chance to take a family picture.

Our trip also gave Braeden and I a chance to catch-up. Here we are playing Lego.

Instead of flying home to Vancouver after the week Alyssa joined me in Regina. We rented a car and headed up to Theodore to spend the weekend with Dianne and Sheridan. It was a very relaxing weekend filled with tile rummy, crossword puzzles, walks and country drives. A great visit.

Here are a few pics of Theodore and surrounding area, including one of a Polinsky Honey Farm bee yard.
